December Doings

It's been a while since I up-dated, mainly because it's the holidays, and we are running about singing at every opportunity, working on Christmas gifts, making pies, catching up with darling daughters and friends, knitting on more gifts, choosing the scotch for the Christmas Athel Brose, admiring the new candlesticks we received as a gift from the Wans...... it's a good time of year :)

* the Scotch choices include this single malt from the area our friends, Peter and Joni live -named after the Spey River near Glasgow!
* It finally snowed, first time this year on December 12th -very late, and instantly went into the negative numbers for degrees..... with wind chill it has been as low as -23!
* the Reindeer Games hat is being made for a gift - shhhhhhhhhh!! don't tell :)
*Jon's considerable pie making skills were married to Robbin's filling fandango, and we came up with a pie filled with apples, cultured sour cream (+one egg!), walnuts, coconut and lots of fresh ground cardamom and cinnamon - a hit with friends at dinner!!
*those lovely candlesticks..... showed up with the FedEx guy one day all the way from Hong Kong and Mr. Wan's family - wow!! they are about 12" high and gorgeous ceramic and brass. These are destined to become heirlooms.

***Athel Brose Recipe: a favorite holiday dessert
whip 2 c. heavy cream
warm 1/2 c. honey and stir into 1c. good scotch,
fold the above together, scoop into ramekins, and place in the freezer.
Serve as you would ice cream - this is light heaven.

Medicare for All should be our goal

" Under the greatest adversity there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others ." ~Dalai Lama And one of Montana's Methodist Ministers, Joan Uda, wrote an editorial for the Great Falls Tribune this week, asking essentially, What would God think of this? Here's a small excerpt: I'm startled by the frenzied opposition to health care reform. Are these good people Christians? Do they recall that Jesus will judge us not by how well we've kept our earnings for ourselves but by how we have cared for "the least of these"? Matthew 25:31-46. This is a matter of salvation. I don't believe God supports any particular solution for health care. But I do believe God wants everyone, even the least, included. And I believe Jesus Christ calls us to display our best Christian virtues in the debate on these issues. Here's George Lakoff's perspective on how language influences the discussion on Health Care policies this seas...

Yes, I have been Knitting...and singing...and cooking!

Firstly, the Knitting! It is being blocked (so that the bottom eyelet row will cradle a lovely red ribbon to tie about the chin!) but here's a little Baby Bonnet hot off the needles, to go along with the tiny Magic Baby Slippers of a few weeks ago: These are for friends Kellie and Josh - expecting their first baby in just a couple more months!!! I think the colors are "uni-sex" enough to go one way or the other..... Then, on our "romantic vacation" to Ottawa a couple of weeks ago, I started these Spiralicious Socks for something to knit on the plane. Jon was absolutely floored when, half-way there, I declared the lacey pattern a misinterpretation of knitting nature. The colours in this yarn change about every 2-3 inches - resulting in a fabulous palette with slubs and interest at every loop. But this yarn.....forced my lovely leaf-lace pattern into hiding. So, I tore back, cast on again, and forged forward with an improvised spiral rib - I rather like them! A...

The Mighty Mid-May Mustard Experiment

Have you ever thought about making your own mustard? You know, the spread of champions; the stripe for your hot dog; the squirt of devil for your boiled eggs..... It's much easier than pie, and here's how to do it~ Place equal amounts of mustard seeds and vinegar in a jar, along with a peeled, halved clove of garlic. I use 1/2 cup seeds to 1/2 cup vinegar. Cover the jar and let it sit for a day or two in the refrigerator. This allows the mustard seeds to plump and soften, as well as absorb some of the lovely garlic flavor. When you are ready to "prepare" your mustard, and you have about 5 minutes to spare, discard the garlic cloves and scrape the remaining seed-sludge into your blender. Add 1/4 -1/2 tsp. salt, 2-3 TBS water, and a good sized blob (maybe a tablespoon) of honey. Blend it to smithereens, or until it becomes pasty, which ever comes first. Last of all, store it in a lovely upcycled mustard crock - or a jar of your choice! in the fridge and use within a c...
